Featured Artist - Marty Noble
Marty Noble, a resident of Anna Maria, is an artist, photographer,
and full time illustrator. Raised in Santa Barbara, California, she
drew inspiration for her art from this 'jewel of the Pacific' city .
All four of her grandparents attended art school together in the
midwest in the 1920's and her maternal grandfather, George C Harper,
went on to become a well known fine and commercial artist. Her mother,
Helen Noble, continued the artist tradition and is known primarily
for her watercolors and monoprints. Both are recognized in American
Artist's Who's Who.
With the encouragement of her family of artists, Marty began her art
strokes from an early age. In the early 60's, when street fairs were
becoming all the rage, she discovered batik, the ancient art of
applying wax and dye to fabrics. Each weekend her pieces sold out at
the street fairs in Santa Barbara and San Francisco and her career as
a professional artist was under way. Simple designs grew into
elaborate and detailed paintings. Ethnic peoples of the world
developed as her favorite subject matter and a passion. Her appetite
for other cultures grew as she traveled in her early 20's to Mexico,
Guatemala, Europe, Israel and Egypt. The beauty she discovered in
these areas inspired her batik paintings that were then sold through
galleries in Southern California over a period of 20 years. More
recently she has traveled to Thailand and Vietnam.
Commission work became predictable and in the 70's she changed her
medium to watercolor and explored opportunities with art publishing
firms. Greeting card companies were the first to publish her designs
and over time her focus shifted completely towards illustration. "I
love the continuing variety of projects that come my way and the
pleasure of seeing the work in many different formats including book
illustration, posters, gift wrap, plate designs, puzzles and
calendars". The majority of assignments in the last several years have
come from Dover Publications, a publisher of design books for artists,
childrens activity books and a broad range of other subjects. Dover's
parent company, Courier is the third largest book manufacturer in the United
States.
