Evolution: Only a Theory? by Joe Kerata
Nov. 11, 2010-11:00 a.m.
There are several misconceptions concerning evolution. Some arise from misuse of terminology, some from misapplication
by popular media, and some are intentional attempts by special interest groups to interfere with the process of
scientific education. Historically, these misconceptions have provided misguided rationales justifying
prejudice, eugenics, social inequity and genocide. Discover what evolution is, what it isn’t, and how to respond
to the misinformed.
Joe Kerata taught advanced biology in northeast Ohio for 30 years and is currently a science instructor at the Lifelong
Learning Academy in Sarasota. His specialty is teaching science to non-scientists. He earned degrees at
Ohio State University and Cleveland State University and is a Princeton University Woodrow Wilson Fellow in
Bioethics. Joe has traveled and studied in Kenya, Peru, Costa Rica, and the Galapagos Islands.
